Hello and welcome to Southdale,
When you come for your first day you may wear street clothes, we have scrubs provided to us. You may want to bring a lock to claim an open locker to secure your items in. We do have a break room with full size refrigerator for lunches. We will also need to set up parking and badge access on your first day so have a form of payment and your license plate number available if you wish to park in the ramps. Our workload is usually busiest in the mornings and we rotate start times as techs so to be sure you are not forgotten about when you come tell the receptionist in the Skyway Lobby it's your first day and ask them to call Main Radiology to notify us you are here and someone will come out to meet you.
I also want to share some information with you regarding what will be expected when wishing to "Test Out" or "Comp" on an exam this semester. We want to be sure you are getting the most out of your experience here and that we are adequately preparing you to work independently in the future. The following items are your guidelines for what the tech will need from you for a successful competency.
1. The student must make it known before the exam that they wish to test out.
2. The student will pull up the patient's name on the work computer, prepare the exam room, retrieve the patient, ask all pertinent questions, perform the exam with no help or intervention from the tech and return the patient to their room.
3. If performing an exam in surgery (using the C-Arm) the student must be able to turn on machine, enter patient info, perform exam on their own, send images, and shut down the equipment properly.
If during the exam something is forgotten, incorrect, or a safety issue the tech may step in or intervene, but by doing so the student will fail the test out attempt and will need to make another attempt. If the student asks what our routine is after the exam has started then this is also considered as stepping in and the student has failed the test out.
These items are specifically listed on your competency sheet handed out by the school. Please do not let this shy you away from asking questions. We are here to be a resource for you. We have a protocol list or binder in every exam room for you to also use as a resource. During downtime become familiar with equipment or ask a tech to run through an exam you might be struggling with. However, when you are performing a Test Out/ Comp this is you showing us you have learned the material and can perform an exam in its entirety on your own. If a tech does need to step in please do not take it personally or feel bad. Everyone makes mistakes, and there's a lot to learn and to be aware of in this job. You are still building your confidence, finding your rhythm and a new site comes with new routines and new equipment. Take your mistakes and our suggestions and build from them.
Our computer paperwork/charting is not something you will need to know, and I know learning techniques has been a challenge. From my understanding the school leaves learning how to set techniques up to your clinical sites. I know all equipment requires a difference in what factors you may be setting. The techs know this is something that will need to be talked about with students based on different skill levels. Even if you don't know what technique should be set, you should know how a technique should be adjusted based on age, body habitus and disease pathology. This can be verbally discussed with the tech.
A final reminder.... please always have someone check your images before you send them. We want to be sure all necessary information is included before we let the patient leave.
Thank you, and again welcome!
